The Volland Store welcomes Mary Pinard, our first poet-in-residence

MARY PINARD is a professor of English at Babson College in Wellesley, MA, where she teaches poetry and literature. Professor Pinard’s poems have appeared in a variety of literary journals—including The Iowa Review, Harvard Review, Prairie Schooner, and The Georgia Review—and she has been the recipient of several national awards for her poetry.

She earned a B.A. in English and Theatre from Saint Mary’s College (Notre Dame, IN), an M.A. in English from University of Chicago, and an M.F.A. in Poetry from Vermont College. She was born and raised in Seattle.

Following a poetry reading and lunch at The Volland Store, Ms. Pinard will conduct a plein air poetry workshop on a ranch nearby.

Participants will have the opportunity to take their notebooks and pencils outdoors, where they can begin to establish a direct relationship with nature, explore a range of landscapes, and quickly record impressions, sensations, images, associations, and ideas that can be further developed in the field, or later back inside.

They may choose a spot that inspires and begin a poem (or at least notes toward a poem); then return to the beginning inside space, where the group will discuss the experience and those interested may share what they’ve written.

The workshop will end with Mary’s offering some guidance for continuing to work on the poem and for incorporating elements of the experience in everyday writing processes going forward.

This is a remarkable opportunity.

The workshop is limited to ten participants. All levels of ability are welcome.
