The Loft and The Little House

Bedroom with exposed brick wall, bed, and small table. White chairs and red flowers.

The Loft at Volland has good books, original art, a tidy kitchen, and a brick-walled bathroom with big windows.

On the second level of The Volland Gallery is a place to read, write, dream, converse, cook a simple meal, listen to good music, and enjoy friends. The light-filled space overlooks the surrounding Flint Hills as well as the gallery below. It is suitable for two persons and is a perfect place from which to explore the beauty of the Flint Hills, retreat from your everyday life, and refresh your soul.

Pack some dining supplies, your walking shoes and a good book as, once you arrive, you won’t want to leave! The Store/gallery is magical and located in such an idyllic setting. The loft is wonderful and appointed perfectly, and the location is just magical. We enjoyed sitting outside under the stars and patio lights, walking the roadways, watching the passing trains and observing the birds and wildlife. We also enjoyed the art show, the wonderful wind-y drive to and from the area towns and learning a little of the local history. The loft is exactly as it appears in the photos. There was coffee and little nibbles provided; the loft has laundry and a nicely appointed kitchenette, and the bed was super comfy. Peggy was easy to communicate with and she provided perfect instructions. And it was a pleasure to meet her and her husband on the lane when they were out doing their ranch chores. We’ll be back!

Just wanted to thank you for an amazing experience in the loft. It was really incredible.

…. the stay was PERFECT. It was quiet, calm, incredibly well appointed. I loved waking up and seeing deer running through the back field, along with wild turkeys, etc.

I would stay there again, anytime. I loved waking up to a quiet art gallery.

The Little House at Volland

A “kit house” from the 1930s has been re-imagined into an open space filled with light by a Design+Make Studio of fifth-year architecture students from Architecture, Planning, and Design at K-State.

In 2019, the class received a Merit Award for Architecture from AIA-KC for their innovative design. In 2022, El Dorado Architects, in collaboration with Design+Make at Kansas State University and College of Architecture, Planning & Design at Kansas State University was honored with an American Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum for Volland House #1, Honorable Mention.

Set in a former railroad town in the heart of the Flint Hills, the “Little House” is a short walk down a country road to the historic Volland Store, A Place for Art and Community. Looking for quiet? for inspiration? The “Little House” is the answer. The perfect retreat from a busy world.

Small white house with porch, lit windows, and trees in a grassy field at dusk.
Living room with modern furniture, windows, artwork, and a rug. Sunlight streams through a window.
