ARTIST STATEMENT
The Fourth Estate features newspaper offices across my home state of Kansas (USA). The photographs celebrate the civic function, labor, and technology at the heart of local journalism, while also documenting an industry under threat, as are the ideals of democracy the industry upholds.
BIO
Jeremiah Ariaz is a photographer whose long-term projects examine the constructs of American identity within personal and political contexts. He was born and raised in rural Kansas.
Ariaz is a recipient of numerous awards and grants, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, Robert Frank Foundation Fellowship, an ATLAS grant, the Michael P. Smith Award for Documentary Photography from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, a Louisiana State Fellowship and the South Arts Finalist Prize.
Ariaz’s works have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions internationally. His photographs have appeared in publications including The New York Times, Oxford American, New York Magazine, and The Paris Review. His writing has been published in The Washington Post, Southern Cultures, and the Flint Hills Field Journal.
Publications include Louisiana Trail Riders (2018) and the series, The Kansas Mirror: The Fourth Estate in the Heart of America (2023 & 2026) which features newspaper offices across his home state. He is a Professor at Louisiana State University.
