FAULT LINES: THE MARION COUNTY RECORD

A 2023 raid by police of the Marion County Record, in Marion, Kansas, was a national controversy.

Fault Lines features photographs Jeremiah Ariaz made of the Marion County Record before and after the police raid.

Since 2022 Jeremiah Ariaz has photographed more than 100 newspaper offices across Kansas for his project The Fourth Estate. The images celebrate the civic function, labor, and technology at the heart of local journalism, while documenting an industry under threat, as are the ideals of democracy the industry upholds.

The photographs of The Fourth Estate are accompanied by The Kansas Mirror: The Fourth Estate in the Heart of America, a newspaper-style publication created by Ariaz to provide a platform to share his work. The first edition included ten original columns by newspaper journalists from across the state creating a collective portrait of the press in Kansas, the communities they serve, and the mounting challenges faced by the newspaper industry today. Weeks before its release, police raided Mirror contributor Eric Meyer’s Marion County Record office and home. “I didn’t think it could happen in America,” Eric said.

The second edition of the Mirror, to be released October 18, in conjunction with Fault Lines, is a collaboration between Ariaz, a 2026 Guggenheim Fellow, and Tim Schuler, a journalist and Marion native. The exhibition and the Kansas Mirror II document the lingering effects of the police raid in the context of the 250th anniversary of the country's founding. Mirror II is dedicated to Marion and includes voices from the town, an essay by Schuler, and photographs by Ariaz. Copies will be available for purchase at the Opening.
