Tanner Bingaman (left) and Phillips Saylor Wisor (right)
Spend your extra hour from daylight savings time with Volland on November 1st. Volland Residents Tanner Bingaman and Phillips Saylor Wisor have generously offered to present a performance starting at 2pm in the Volland Gallery. The two touring musicians hail from back east where they live about 40 minutes from each other and regularly collaborate.
Tanner and Phillips each applied for a Volland Residency without knowing the other had done so... the serendipity only becoming apparent when they saw they'd be overlapping. Tanner and Phillips will each share their own work for about 40 minutes then get together for a duo for another 20 minutes on November 1st. Both will share works in progress from their Volland Residency along with past work.
Stripmall Ballads - Phillips Saylor Wisor
Brunswick, MD
Stripmall Ballads is Maryland songwriter Phillips Saylor Wisor, alone on stage with a guitar and a banjo, singing story-songs about old brick buildings, vacant lots, and long drives through nowhere towns. His music sets Appalachian tradition against modern disillusionment, with a weary, cracked voice and a dry wit that keeps the sadness honest. Folk and Tumble (Ireland) called it "21st century Dustbowl Americana." He's at his best in listening rooms and intimate venues, where his heartfelt stories between songs draw people in.
Wisor has played every U.S. state in the lower 48 and every Canadian province, and has shared bills with John R. Miller, Willy Tea Taylor, Danny Barnes, Les Claypool, and The Be Good Tanyas. His album Distant won the 2021 Wammie Award for Best Folk Album, and his latest, Everybody Wins, was released February 10, 2026.
Tanner Bingaman's Pretty Big Garden
Fairfield, PA
Songwriter, multi-instrumentalist (banjo, guitar, harmonica), poet, and visual artist Tanner Bingaman spends his days foraging writhing folk art from the hills of Appalachia. He performs and produces original and traditional mountain music under the moniker Tanner Bingaman's Pretty Big Garden. Tanner spent nearly a decade working mostly in solitude as a farmhand before hitting the road full time. He prefers barefoot walking and once saved the family dog from a rattlesnake.
In 2021, Tanner was awarded Emerging Artist of the Year by the Susquehanna Folk Music Society. In 2024, Tanner released the first full- length album from Tanner Bingaman's Pretty Big Garden, Everything & Nothing. Tanner Bingaman's Pretty Big Garden was awarded Best Americana Artist by the Central Pennsylvania Music Hall of Fame in 2024. Bingaman's sophomore album, Jubilee!, is due out late 2026 via Heady Wax Fiends, indie record stores, and Tanner's own online store.
