Arched roof cellars, unique to the Flint Hills, have piqued an interest that continues to be strong.

Tours of these cellars were first offered by The Volland Store in the Spring of 2016 as a response to the Store’s art exhibit “The Spirit of Place: Rooted in the Flint Hills” by Tom Parish. Tours of arched cellars in Wabaunsee County in the Spring of 2016 quickly sold out, and additional tours have been offered every Fall and Spring since.

In the working landscape of the Flint Hills, many structures have fallen into disrepair, but there are stunning barns and outbuildings with fascinating stories to tell.

Through the years, as guests traveled down country roads from cellar to cellar, they noticed the barns, the sheds, and the other outbuildings that dotted the landscape. They asked questions about them and suggested a barn tour. Rob Meseke, the tour guide, understood their curiosity. He too was fascinated by barns. A fourth-generation Wabaunsee County resident, he grew up around these structures and knew their stories. This Spring, Rob will lead The Volland Store’s first barn tours.

More details:

The Tours begin at 1:00pm from The Volland Store.

The Gallery opens at noon, and we encourage you to arrive early to enjoy the current art exhibit and check-in with your Tour Guide.

As a convenience for tour participants, lunch is available prior to the tour, by reservation. Please make your lunch reservation by Thursday noon prior to your tour.

If you have ordered a lunch, it will be ready at noon – you are welcome to find a seat in the gallery, or at the picnic tables outside and in the Blacksmith Shop.  Tea and water are provided with lunch.

Participants will be bussed to the tour stops. The tour will take you on private property. As you visit the sites, you will hear about their unique history. You are welcome to bring a flashlight for better viewing in interior spaces.

Wear good walking shoes and be prepared for uneven ground. Walking sticks are welcome.

Dress appropriately for the weather. Please watch our Facebook page or vollandfoundation.org for weather cancellations and updates.

We anticipate the tour to take up to 4 hours. We will have you back to your vehicle by approximately 5 pm.

You are welcome to bring food and drinks on the bus. It is an eventful day and can get quite warm in the afternoon sun.  We recommend bringing water to keep hydrated. There will be at least one restroom break during the tour.

You are welcome to take photos (please share them with us on Facebook or through email!)

If the weather blesses us with rain, we will continue the tour.  Please watch the forecast and dress appropriately.

We look forward to seeing you!

Directions from Alma:
Take Third Street west past the court house heading out of town. The road turns into Old K-10 Road. Follow it for 8 miles to Volland Road, turn left onto Volland Road. The Volland Store is on your right just past the white houses. Please pull into the driveway and park in the mowed grass beyond the blacksmith shop. Please do not park along the roadway. It needs to remain a clear traffic way.
