Did you miss going to Symphony in the Flint Hills this summer?
Let's gather in the prairie and celebrate their legacy!
You are invited to gather on the prairie to celebrate the Symphony in the Flint Hills legacy of raising awareness of the Flint Hills – at Volland on July 18.
Enjoy a relaxed, late summer afternoon of wandering the grounds, sharing memories and looking ahead, as you visit with old friends and make new ones.
Meet Flint Hills artists whose work has often graced the pages of Symphony in the Flint Hills Field Journals. Their art will be on exhibit in the gallery, thanks to the curation of Matt Regier, art editor of the Field Journal for a number of years.
Enjoy Jonny’s BBQ (from Council Grove), beverages from MHK Caravan Co., and homemade ice cream from Flint Hills Pints.
Visit the M.T. Liggett Sculpture Park across Volland Road - or take a pasture and woodland hike on the Nature Trail and view sculptures by Mark McHenry.
Learn about Flint Hills groups who were somehow inspired or even spawned by the phenomenon of thousands of people gathering in a Flint Hills pasture to learn of and appreciate the national treasure of an endangered landscape of tallgrass prairie. Learn how the legacy of Symphony of the Flint Hills is being carried forward.
The evening will close with a
performance by the beloved
Cherokee Maidens, whose members are traveling from across the country to celebrate the occasion!
We hope you will join us for a glorious day in the Flint Hills!
It is remarkable that a singular vision enacted by a bold idea was the beginning of a broad awareness of an overlooked or unknown treasure. Ranchers steward the land, thankfully, for the rest of us, as this wild and open space becomes more unique with each passing day. We too can know the Flint Hills, love them, and advocate for their preservation. Indeed, it is the best way for all of us to honor the legacy of Symphony in the Flint Hills.
A Tribute to the Art of Symphony in the Flint Hills Fields Journal
Inside Volland's gallery, an exhibition curated by Matthew Regier - Matfield Green resident, artist, designer, founder of The School for Rural Culture and Creativity, and the art editor of the last handful of Symphony in the Flint Hills Field Journals - will highlight past SFH Journal participants: Zak Barnes, Clare Doveton, Terry Evans, Lisa Grossman, Philip Heying, Mary Kay, Bill McBride, and Jim Richardson.
Matt writes of these artists: "Collectively, their work shows us the breadth of the landscape from its flora and fauna and human cultural significance, to the unique geological structure of the slowly eroded layers of bedrock that made these hills."
The Cherokee Maidens will close out the day with a concert to remember!

Rising up from deep musical roots in America's heartland, The Cherokee Maidens, along with their star-studded band, Sycamore Swing, pay homage to the past.
Think Bob Wills meets the Andrews Sisters.
The melodic braid of these three maidens is time-tested. Robin Macy has sung up and down the I-35 corridor for decades. Together with red-dirt girl Monica Taylor and bluegrass virtuoso, Lauren White, you've got signature three-part harmonies that weave their way into your heart.
One was a Dixie Chick. Two have appeared on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion. Two have sung at the Grand Ole Opry. And all three share Native American heritage - hence their name, inspired by Cindy Walker's 1941 country hit.
Backed by a troupe of crackerjack musicians, led by Kentucky White, their guitar-slinger who produced both recordings, Sycamore Swing keeps the classic genre authentic - featuring the best of the fabled Tulsa Playboys.
They all share this passion for the past and that sets them apart from the pack and unites them as a tribe. Currently they're back in the saddle working on their third recording. This time, country swing legend Ray Benson of Asleep at the Wheel will croon a tune.
Food, Drink, Dessert
Jonny V's BBQ will serve pulled pork and chicken dinners with potato salad. Meals must be purchased beforehand. $20 plus tax and fee.
MHK Caravan Co. is bringing their bar for mixed drinks and beer.
And for dessert, cool off with ice cream from Flint Hills Pints.
