Match Day is an opportunity for community members to support the many nonprofit organizations that do good work to enhance and fill needs in our community. Often, the nonprofits have a specific need that requires funding. This is the first year that the Volland Foundation is participating, and we do have a specific need!
In June of 2015, The Volland Store re-opened as a Place for Art and Community after sitting vacant for forty years. The Store’s roof had leaked for quite some time before it finally fell in, and the interior was in complete ruin. Nevertheless, the walls were strong, and an entire renovation brought the Store back to life.
Eleven years later (last month), big winds and multiple inches of driving rain (twice in the same week) found every tiny chink in the mortar of the west wall, and rain found its way into the building. The Store (now the Volland Gallery) is threatened again, but we are determined not to let the elements win this time. The history of the Store and Volland are too important to lose.
The west wall of the brick building needs to be newly tuckpointed. As you can imagine, replacing all the mortar that holds the bricks in place will be tedious and expensive, and it must be done right to provide protection from future storms. With your help, the building can be made watertight for another hundred years.
We invite you to play an important role in preserving the historic Volland Store, and with it, the history of Volland. We would be most grateful for your consideration.

How it works
A gift to participating area non-profits, including the Volland Foundation, will be raised by 50% up to $5,000. This year, the Patterson Family Foundation granted $50,000 to the Alma Area Foundation, plus an addition $30,000 from matching donors, bringing the total match to over $80,000.
For example: A $100 dollar donation to the Volland Foundation (through the Alma Area Foundation's Match Day) will be raised by the matching dollars to $150.
Want to help? There are three main ways to participate in Match Day
- Through mailed donations (must be postmarked on or before August 25th): print the donation form below, fill it out, and include it with your check. Donations must be accompanied by a donation form.
- Online: Please note, Online donation will open for three days only - between August 24th, 12:00 am and August 26th, 11:59pm. Visit the Alma Area Foundation Match Day website during those times and select the Volland Foundation.
- In-person: Come say hello and see all the important organizations and groups in the Alma Area at the KanEquip Arena, Wabaunsee County Fairgrounds - 425 E Ninth St Alma, KS - on Tuesday, August 25th from 4 to 7pm. Volland will have a table set up and we'd enjoy talking with you more about what we do. Donations can be received in person.
- Gifts from donor advised funds, gifts of grain, an IRA, or gifts of stock are also possible. Please see the instructions the Alma Area Foundation outlined to arrange for these gifts.
